At this point in Matthew's writing, Jesus has already entered Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), chased the money changers out of the temple, and has a series of confrontations with the temple leaders (Pharisees and Sadducees). This is all leading up to the climax, Jesus death on the cross.
This text is an allegory about a vineyard and tenants who do not want to pay the rent. It is easy for us to read and think, yes, they would deserve whatever punishment they received. However, the truth is that we are the new tenants in God's vineyard.
Are we better tenants? Are we producing good fruit?
There is a terrific story in the sermon about cookies. I encourage you to listen, or read it in the transcript. This story is one that you will remember, and puts life in perspective.
